REIBC: The Retrofit Challenge

Re-thinking Existing Residential Neighbourhoods for Deep Greenhouse Gas Reductions

This UBC research project employed a combination of scenarios and local case studies to explore a range of retrofit options for residential neighbourhoods.

Using three scenarios - Current Policy Direction, Intensive Building Retrofits and Neighbourhood Focused Approach - the study tested what current policy might achieve in comparison to an 80% GHG reduction target for residential buildings.

Modelled results were communicated using 3D and information graphics. The three case studies demonstrate that a single retrofit/redevelopment solution would not be applicable to every neighbourhood across BC: neighbourhoods require specific assessments of opportunities and constraints, including building age, orientation and construction details, the neighbourhood’s spatial configuration, the age and condition of existing infrastructure, and the availability of local renewable energy resources.
